Collective Worship

The 1988 Education Reform Act (ERA) states that Collective Worship must take place on every school day in VA schools and can take place at any time of day, and comprise whole school or separate acts according to classes or year groups.

Collective Worship is central to our school life.  The worshiping experiences of pupils and staff should be of the highest quality and include a multitude of experiences to contribute to a broader and richer understanding of what can be achieved through the act of worship – a development of our own and the children’s search for spirituality.

Acts of Worship should:
• Be inclusive
• Have time for prayer and personal reflection
• Be shaped to the particular needs of individuals and the school
• Be educational
• Have a sense of occasion
• Contribute to the religious education of all pupils

At St Thomas à Becket we come together to offer our worship to God, to share a variety of experiences including words, music and silence. In our worship we aim to think deeply about ourselves, our relationships with others and God’s world.
We hope to welcome everyone present as an active member of our worshiping community and assist them in their spiritual journey through a shared experience of enquiry, reflection, prayer and celebration.

Each term our Collective Worship follows the theme of our School Values. Throughout the year we also celebrate all the main church celebrations and seasons such as; Advent, Christmas, Easter, Harvest, Lent, Ascension Day, Pentecost and Holy Trinity.  Speakers will be invited in to school on a regular basis to share their experiences.

We would hope that all pupils will take part in Collective Worship. However, we respect the right of parents to withdraw their children. Parents wishing to do so are advised to discuss the matter with the Head teacher in the first instance.

The organisation of Acts of Worship throughout the week is as follows:

• Monday – Whole School Collective Worship
• Tuesday – Class Worship
• Wednesday – Worship through music
• Thursday  – Church Worship led by a minister
• Friday – Family Celebration Worship

Harvest, Christmas, Easter and Leavers’ Service will all take place in church. Parents are invited to attend these services which we advertise  in the school newsletter and village magazine as well as the website calendar.  Parents are invited to Celebration Worship on a Friday.
