At our school, we are passionate about providing rich, meaningful play opportunities for all children. One of the ways we do this is through our Scrapstore Playpod—a large, well-resourced shed filled with loose parts that spark imagination, creativity and collaboration.

What is a Playpod?

Our Playpod is stocked with a wide range of everyday materials and “loose parts” such as crates, tyres, pipes, fabric, ropes, and containers. These items have no fixed purpose, which means children can use them in countless ways—building, creating, transporting, inventing and imagining.

Rather than structured equipment with a single use, the Playpod encourages child-led, open-ended play, giving pupils the freedom to explore ideas and solve problems independently.

Why We Introduced It

We first saw the incredible benefits of loose parts play in EYFS and KS1, where children were thriving through exploration and hands-on learning. The enthusiasm, creativity and collaboration we witnessed inspired us to expand this approach across the whole school.

The Playpod allows children of all ages to:

• Develop creativity and imagination
• Build resilience and independence
• Improve teamwork and communication skills
• Engage in active, physical play
• Explore risk in a managed and meaningful way

Learning Through Play

The Playpod supports a wide range of learning beyond the classroom. During breaktimes and lunchtimes, children naturally:

• Design and construct structures
• Role-play and tell stories
• Experiment with problem-solving
• Negotiate roles and collaborate with peers

This type of play helps to build confidence, perseverance and critical thinking, all of which are essential life skills.

A Safe and Supported Environment

Safety is always a priority. We have:

• Completed thorough risk assessments
• Provided training for staff to support safe play
• Established clear expectations for children when using the Playpod

Children are encouraged to take managed risks, helping them to develop awareness, judgement and responsibility in a supported environment.

Encouraging Creativity for All

The beauty of the Playpod lies in its inclusivity—there is no “right” or “wrong” way to play. Every child can access it in their own way, regardless of age, ability or interest.

From building dens and obstacle courses to inventing games and creating imaginative worlds, the Playpod offers something for everyone.

We are incredibly proud of our Scrapstore Playpod and the positive impact it is having across our school community. It brings learning to life through play, curiosity and creativity—values that are at the heart of everything we do.
